Lifeguards are usually the first thing you see when you land on a beach, so when you ask what to do, it’s always important to know what you’re doing before you leave.
You can find an all-encompassing course of training to become a lifeguard, from how to operate your equipment and how to deal with a lifejackets, to getting your license and training to becoming a certified lifeguard.
However, not everyone will be able to take a class in their area.
“Some states are having lifeguards training on their beaches, but not all,” says Laura Johnson, founder of The Lifeguard Training Academy.
She’s a certified instructor in lifeguard certification and teaches the classes in New York City.
“I would like to think that they’re all pretty good,” she says, adding that some schools are teaching less.
While some courses may not have the certification or training to pass the certification test, others will, so it’s best to start by learning how to be a lifeguards first.
The first step is to register as a lifeguarding instructor in your state.
If you live in New Jersey or Pennsylvania, register online to begin the process.
The lifeguard training academy in New Mexico offers the classes, but they cost $50 per class.
For those in California, the cost is $100 per class and they’re available for free to all students, regardless of residency.
After that, you’ll need to pay $200 for a lifejacket certification test to be able take the course.
Depending on your area, you may have to pay for the certification testing at your local fire station or your local licensed lifeguard or marine instructor.
Once you’ve registered for a class, you will need to register for a certificate of competency (CCC) to become an instructor.
“When you take the CCC test, you have to pass a federal certification exam that tests your knowledge and ability to teach the basics of lifeguards,” Johnson says.
“Once you pass that, your certificate of competencies will be recognized by the state.”
The certification exam is a state approved certifying agency that is required for all lifeguard instructors in the state.
It takes about two weeks to pass.
In some states, you may be able pay to take the test online, or you may need to have the state test administered in person, Johnson says.
There are two types of lifeguard certifications: Certificate of Competency (COC) for lifeguards and certified lifeguards.
Certified lifeguards are the ones who pass the COC test.
When you’re looking for a certified school, you should be looking at the cost of certification, not the cost per class, Johnson says, because they may be more expensive.
Another way to look at it is to consider the cost to educate your students, if they pass the COC test and become certified.
Some schools require that the certification is passed by a minimum of three years, while others are open to graduating from the program.
Additionally, you need to find out what certification you’re applying for so that you can get the certification exam, Johnson notes.
These certification tests can be expensive, especially if you plan on working on a cruise ship, so you might want to consider taking out a loan to get the testing done.
Finally, if you have questions, the Lifeguard Academy offers lifeguards certification tests online or in person.
